An adjunct to this approach that I like is the instruction to physicians attributed to Hippocrates (although not part of the Hippocratic Oath): “First, do no harm.”

A great deal of good advice is summed up in those words.

Yeah, I came 'round to that recently when I was thinking about the future. And someone challenged me on the possibility of avoiding the peak oil/global warming consequences. I thought that the directions I'm planning and heading are fine even if none of it comes to pass.
