Kathy Harrison's next book is about exactly this subject in terms of cooking and kitchen tools - she test drove everything. She'd be a good person to ask on that subject and her blog is linked to in my sidebar. As for the rest - there are definitely some posts on this subject, and I'll try and add some more.
