BTW, all grains are &quot;high fat grains&quot; - that is, when you disturb their hulls, the oils in them become available, and yet, oats can go rancid.  But they don&#039;t go rancid nearly as quickly as say, brown rice, and even rolled oats store for a couple of years on average (I spent a long time reading really boring USDA papers on storage lives of grains for Independence Days) if kept cool, and bought reasonably fresh.

		<description>I soak oats overnight in water (or milk if we&#039;re in luck) and a bit of yoghurt.  The yoghurt does something to it (ask Sally Fallon!)- all I have to do is heat and the kids just eat it.     :-)</description>

		<description>Not very fond of oats as oatmeal -- I think it&#039;s something about the texture.  Or maybe the overwhelming blandness of it.  However, I am truly enjoying it as muesli (apologies to scandinavian language speakers -- don&#039;t know how to put the umlaut-type thingie in properly).  Raw rolled oats, chopped nuts, some brown sugar, wheat and oat germ,  some corn flakes (makes it less &quot;heavy&quot; tasting, although I can and have eaten it plain), and dried fruit of some kind.  I am terribly fond of cherries, which is probably not wise given that I live in Minnesota.  ;)  Apples are good too, though, and raisins.  Need to eat up the prunes I have on hand -- not very fond of them, but don&#039;t want to just throw them out, either.  Maybe *with* apples.

However, the *milk* with the muesli does present some problems.  I am very slightly lactose intolerant (like many adults).  Doesn&#039;t actually make me *sick*, just, um.....gassy.  It does ensure the bowels keep moving though.  Am considering switching milk type products, but again, given where I live, cow&#039;s milk is going to be what&#039;s readily available when the world goes to heck in a bucket.  Unless we can convince the City Councils to allow urban goats.  (Is goat&#039;s milk less likely to upset adult systems than cow&#039;s milk?  I&#039;m certainly willing to give it a try.)  I&#039;ve sprinkled it on top of yogurt with fruit, and it&#039;s delightful that way, too.

Ditto on loving the food storage quickies -- one or two things to focus on at a time is a Good Thing.</description>

Still, what I would not suggest is anyone shifting their own or other people who may rely on their stored food&#039;s diets radically in times of crisis - do it now if you are going to give up all sweeteners, grains, whatever.
