Movin' On Up

Sharon November 13th, 2009

I head off into the weekend with a reminder that if you are in the lower Hudson Valley and want to come say hi, I’ll be at Millbrook Winery from 1-4 on Saturday signing books and chatting people up!

I’ve also got some news. Over on facebook, I’ve been hinting at big changes in my blog.  No, I haven’t been invited to be a guest columnist at Fox News Blog, nor have I decided to pretty up the space with ads from Shell, Monsanto and Satan himself.  Nor am I going to an all-celebrity format, since I don’t know any.

What is happening is that I’m changing internet digs.  Contracts have not yet been signed, but your friendly neighborhood Apocalyptic Prophetess of Doom has been invited to blog in new territory, and it looks like I’m going to be moving on up, to the Deluxe Blog Address in the Sky.  All the old rantings and ravings, challenges and such will come with me, and I’m going to be trying some new stuff as well.

The new site will have more ads on it, I’m afraid – but the chance for me to blog at a high traffic, fairly mainstream audience site, where I’ll maybe have a chance of reaching more people and maybe effecting a bit more societal change is not one I want to miss.

And they will pay me for blogging, at least a little (hence the ads), which gets me off the horns of a dilemma – you all know that once my Adapting in Place book is complete, I plan to go back to farming as a primary project, and spend less time writing and teaching.  The question is how I balance the time I do spend writing and teaching.  Agriculture is not so remunerative that I  can afford to give up all the work that I do that actually pays decently, but the blog is my first love. I was hoping the blog wouldn’t suffer from my need to balance agriculture and the stuff that actually buys your working girl’s stash of pinto bean seeds.  This means that there’s no conflict – the blog can be my primary project, because it is at least mildly remunerative.

Look for an announcement of the new site next week, and an eventual transition over.  I’m excited about it.  I hope it is a good move for everyone.

Sharon

  1. Now you are living proof of the old adage, “Do what you love and the money will follow”! That’s awesome.

As a dedicated Astykian, of course I’ll follow the Apocalyptic Prophetess of Doom wherever she may go: can’t wait to see the new digs! Congrats.

This is great news for you (and hopefully us.) I’ll reserve judgment
until I see those ads ;-)

    Congratulations and best wishes!

You certainly should be paid for your blogging, so this is good news.

I’d love to spend my 11th anniversary coming to meet you at the winery/book-signing event tomorrow but seem to be committed to attending a football game with my husband and three children instead. Somehow I can’t quite bring myself to ask my husband to spend our anniversary taking the kids to the game without me. I hope the event is fun.

Can’t wait to see the changes next week!

    Congratulations!

I have my hopes where you’ll be going–not for your sake but for theirs. I do hope it will be a good move for you.

Oh–by the way, do you know you are mentioned on the latest episode of Peak Moment? http://www.youtube.com/user/peakmoment#p/u/0/zke32JlzebU

Congratulations Sharon and I will gladly ignore (I mean read) more ads just to enjoy your wonderful blog.

Sharon’s hittin’ the Big Time! ;D

Of course I’ll follow — while occasionally reading articles here depresses me beyond words, you *always* give us something to do about it all. And the gardening and preserving knowledge is precious beyond words. And the goat sex. (Who can forget the goat sex? Even if they try? ;) )

Looking forward to you reaching a larger audience. If anyone out there can weather the slings and arrows of a larger audience with more skeptics, and it sling it all right back at them, it’s you. Go You! :D

  11. Sharon, I just found your website (after sending you a message to join Facebook. duh.). I bought your book called “Independence Day: A Guide to Sustainable Food Storage & Preservation” at the Millbrook Winery today. I am going to write about it on my company’s Facebook page if you want to let your readers know. I am building a greenhouse and am so looking forward to reading about preserving the foods that I will grow. By the way, the event at the Winery was wonderful. A lot of people attended and seemed to be buying books and other goodies, such as locally made wines, cheeses and baked goods.

I am SUPER excited for you Sharon! You definately deserve it and your write so well! I’m glad more people will ahve a chance to see your words.

Guess what. We moved to a new house and discovered that having an adequate well in Alaska is a challenge, not just for this house, but generally. I’m learning a lot by immersion in lack of water, but there just aren’t many adequate aquifers in Alaska….I’m shocked since we have SO much actual water!

So baby, I have learned to conserve!!! And when you conserve one thing it lead automatically to conserving other things. At first it was not much fun. In fact, it sucked! But I’m all adapted and it easy now.
