Anyone Know What To Do When Your Site is Virally Contaminated?

Sharon February 10th, 2010

I’ve tried asking for tech support, but I can’t figure it out. This site has a virus in/on it, and it isn’t working very well, but I have no idea what to do about it. Anyone have any suggestions? Help!!!!

First, change your password(s). Then find the offending bit of code in your template and delete it.

There is a pretty good chance WordPress got hacked.

Do you know if you are running the latest version, 2.9.1?

The virus could be in your database, so you really need to wipe it clean and reinstall your site, if you have good enough back ups.

Sounds like you may need a better host too.

It looks like you are using WordPress 2.8.4, so that could be how you got hacked, upgrading to the latest version would offer you a bit more protection.

I see some encrypted code that had been injected into your theme’s footer, so at the very least your site’s theme has been infected. But I would recommend wiping your site as clean as you can and reinstalling WordPress, your theme, and any plugins you may be running.

Let me know if you need a hand, I’ve cleaned up my fair share of sites.

JLeuze – I tried to email – I’d cheerfully accept any help you can offer. Wiping and upgrading are well beyond my capacities. A friend managed to clean some of it up, but it was beyond his as well.

When I click above, I can’t get an email. I’m jewishfarmer@gmail.com, if you have time to help. I’ll gladly barter for it!

See Old WordPress Versions Under Attack as it may not be as easy as those who are commenting here say. It sucks, but good luck with it, and keep your WordPress blog updated at all times. The worms/viruses going around are not just targeting WordPress blogs, but all sites, so keep it updated to protect yourself, no matter what platform you are using.

This explains why my work virus scanner won’t let me access your site.
