Stocks rise on hopes for continued Fed stimulus

LONDON (AP) — Stocks posted some modest gains Thursday after a run of unspectacular U.S. economic data eased concerns that the Federal Reserve will start to reduce the amount of financial assets it buys each month.

The advances on Wall Street and European exchanges came after figures showed U.S. economic growth in the first quarter downgraded to an annualized rate of 2.4 percent from 2.5 percent, weekly jobless claims surprisingly up 10,000 and pending home sales rising by far less than anticipated in April. Meritor Announces Pricing of $275 Million of Senior Unsecured Notes

Promise of central bank support lifts world shares

LONDON (Reuters) - Investors seized on clear pledges of policy support from Japanese and European central banks on Tuesday to drive world shares higher, sending the yen down sharply against the dollar and boosting oil prices.

High costs, currency push Ford out of Australia car manufacturing

CANBERRA (Reuters) - Ford Motor Co will shut its two Australian auto plants in October 2016, blaming a strong currency and costs that are hitting manufacturers just as the country looks for other sectors of its economy to cushion the end of a mining boom.

Ford Australia will close its engine plant in Geelong and its vehicle assembly plant in Broadmeadows, both in Victoria state, with the loss of 1,200 jobs, Ford Australia Chief Executive Bob Graziano said on Thursday, the latest election-year blow to the struggling Labor government.
