Holy Freakin' Crap – Guess What I'm Holding?!?!?

Sharon August 7th, 2008

My book.

I’m holding an actual copy of my book in my hand.   Holy Crap.

It wasn’t supposed to arrive for at least a week.

Holy crap.  There’s an actual book.  It has my name on it.

People always say writing is like having a baby, and frankly, I’ve always thought that was complete and utter nonsense.  I hate being pregnant – hate it. I kind of like writing.

But this part is, actually, like my experience of having a baby – after all this time of abstractly knowing that there was this thing coming, but not really believing it (’cause I was too busy throwing up or trying to find some way to sit that wouldn’t create heartburn or writhing in labor in the one case, and writing other stuff and starting up crazy projects I have no time for in the other), I always found the actual arrival of the baby to be wonderful, but kind of mystifying.  How on earth was it connected to all that other unpleasantness again?  But…wow.  Look at that!  A baby

This is kind of like that.  Wow. Look at that.  A book.

I wish I could show it to you, but I don’t think it ships to bookstores for a few weeks.

Ok, I have to go stare at it for a while.

    Sharon,

I’ve had that experience (a book not a baby; my uterus is vestigial). I know exactly how you feel. May you have the feeling many more times.

  13. I went to the big city last week to visit my parents, and found myself in an actual bookstore, the kind that carries new books. I asked them about your book, made the guy look it up on the computer, until he found it and said “it will be here in September”. “Cool, thanks!” I said, not mentioning that I don’t live there and will buy my copy elsewhere. Just stirring up a little excitement; when they go to place their orders, maybe they’ll remember they already had a request for it… :)

I will probably defer buying a personal copy and instead persuade my library to buy one, or perhaps I’ll buy one for the library myself. I’ll repeat the question an earlier commenter asked: what is YOUR preferred route for us to buy?

Congratulations! I feel like a friend has achieved all of the above. Enjoy your success!

    Sharon,

Congratulations! How exciting. I’ve forgotten how you said to go about pre-ordering a copy from you, but of course Andi and I want one, and would love for you to sign it.

And…I wish I were taking your adapting in place class, too–learned so much from the food storage one–but don’t have the time to devote to it right now. I’m reading along, though, and wanted to let you know how grateful I am…

Mazel tov, Sharon!!!!!!!!! That is very wonderful. I can’t wait to see (and maybe even read) the real thing myself, although if I’m brutally honest I’ll probably be a tad less excited than I was when each of the boys arrived ;-) . Seriously–I’m thrilled, on my own and for you.

More prolific than a baby, at least immediately. This is the first ‘clone.’ May thousand and thousands, or even millions, go forth and spread your message of hope…The Ground is GROWING! The Ground is GROWING!

    Congrats!

  24. dewey says:

Those four-year “pregnancies” will kill ya… At least you know your publications will never embarrass you by getting arrested holding a beer bong, right? Nothing but pride, all the way! Congratulations a dozen times over! (And don’t be in a hurry to read it carefully. There will always be typos or mistakes. Don’t find them.)

  25. Congrats! I can’t wait to read it!

  26. Frogdancer says:
